Getting Started in Backgammon

A lot of new players make the same mistake when attempting to play Backgammon online. They read about the money tourneys, download a game and learn the rules. After a few games they play for money and lose, getting frustrated in the process. That is not how you become good at the game.

The first thing a new Backgammon player must learn is that learning the rules of the game is not enough to turn you into a winner, anymore than knowing how to read music notes can make you into the next Mozart. There are several things that you should first before playing Backgammon online.

After familiarizing yourself with the rules and regulations, get acquainted with the basic Backgammon strategies. All successful Backgammon players began by learning the basics, so start there. You can either buy books on the subject (of which there are many), or better yet, go online and read the free tutorials and articles.

Next download a game and play. Most of them are free, so there is no harm trying. If you lose, do not blame it on the dice; just accept the fact that you are still a new player and are competing against a computer. If you prefer to play against people, it is easy to find a free Backgammon online server.

Again, do not be too discouraged if you lose; it is just part of your training. If you get taunts, just look for another server. That is probably not even necessary, for most Backgammon online servers are filled with players who are only too willing to help new players like you.

That is how you get started in Backgammon games. Just keep playing and learning new strategies. Eventually the time will come when you will feel ready to play Backgammon for money or in tourneys. Win or lose, you should always review the game. See what you did, right or wrong, and try to improve your skills.

An oft asked question is when is when can a player truly say when he is ready to compete in Backgammon online money tourneys. The answer is when you are willing and ready to accept your losses.

Learning to accept that a losing is a part of the game, and that you will have to move on to win, means that you are on your way to becoming the Backgammon player you knew you could be.
